WANA (Jan 18) – Wall Street Journal reporter Lawrence Norman has disclosed details of recent discussions between Iran and Europe in Geneva, highlighting significant warnings from Tehran regarding potential policy shifts.

According to Norman, Iranian officials told European counterparts that if the snapback mechanism—reinstating international sanctions—is activated, Iran would not only withdraw from the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) but may also alter its nuclear doctrine or stance. This development marks a critical point in Iran’s diplomacy and nuclear strategy.

Norman emphasized that while such a move might not be entirely surprising, this is the first time Iran has directly conveyed such a message to Western officials.

Norman noted that Iran’s overarching message reflects a willingness to negotiate. However, Tehran insists that former U.S. President Donald Trump make an initial offer before further dialogue can proceed.

The reporter also revealed that the E3 (France, Germany, and the UK) informed Iran on Monday in Geneva that ballistic missiles must be included in any future negotiations. In response, Iranian representatives categorically rejected this proposition.

These developments underline the mounting complexities in Iran’s relations with Europe and the broader international community as nuclear and missile issues remain at the forefront of diplomatic tensions.
